WHO THIS IS FOR

Men who've understood the problem
but can't stop running the pattern.

If you've tried therapy and it gave you insight but not resolution, if the anger or anxiety doesn't match your current circumstances, if you can explain your patterns to anyone who asks but still can't stop them, this is what changes that.

Divorce and relationship breakdown
Childhood trauma affecting adult life
Grief, loss and betrayal
Anger that feels uncontrollable or disproportionate
Patterns that trace back to more than one event
Behaviours you rely on to get through the day
Anxiety that logic can't explain
Patterns you can see but can't stop repeating
Bullying (childhood or workplace)
Self-sabotage in relationships and career
THE PROBLEM

Why talk therapy doesn't resolve trauma
for most men.

Talk therapy engages your Prefrontal Cortex, the logical part of your brain. It helps you understand what happened and why. For many men, that understanding is already there. You've read the books. You've done the sessions. You can explain your patterns to anyone who asks.

But understanding is not resolution.

When stress hits, logic goes offline. Your Subconscious Protection Programs take over. These programs were written by your nervous system at the moment of trauma, and no amount of conscious reframing can override them.

For some men, repeatedly revisiting traumatic events without resolving the emotional charge can reinforce the pattern rather than change it.

Strong Shoulders works at the subconscious level. We identify the root cause of the pattern, the specific moment the emotion first got attached, release the charge at its source, and reprogram the subconscious to respond differently.

We don't need to go into deep detail about any events from your life. We just need to identify when and what, in order to release it.

THE METHODOLOGY

A three-tier protocol.
Matched to you, not a fixed program.

Most practitioners apply one method to everyone. That produces inconsistent results. Your tier is determined by your nervous system capacity and resistance profile.

NLP Timeline TechniquesMemory ReconsolidationPolyvagal-Informed Practice

T.01

Physical Timeline

High-resistance, analytical clients

Concrete, somatic, body-based processing built for men who intellectualise their experience. Works at the physiological level, bypassing conscious resistance entirely. Visualisation and willingness to engage are required. Scepticism is fine. Belief accelerates the work.

T.02

Enhanced Traditional Timeline

Polyvagal monitoring, bilateral stimulation

Builds on the physical foundation with real-time polyvagal nervous system monitoring. The protocol adapts to your nervous system state during the session rather than following a fixed script. Bilateral stimulation accelerates integration and reduces total session count.

Memory Reconsolidation Protocol

Advanced clients: lasting structural change

Memory reconsolidation (Astill Wright et al., 2021) allows the brain to update the emotional content of stored memories during a specific biological window. Not suppression. Not reframing. Lasting change at the neural level. The memory remains. The charge does not.

THE EVIDENCE

Peer-reviewed. Published.
Not anecdotal.

The techniques used here draw on mechanisms studied in peer-reviewed research: memory reconsolidation, polyvagal regulation, somatic processing. The studies below describe those mechanisms. Read them as the reasoning behind the method, not as a prediction of your result.

Meta-Analysis
Astill Wright et al. (2021)
A meta-analysis of 25 randomised controlled trials in Translational Psychiatry found memory reconsolidation therapies produced a standardised mean difference of SMD: -1.42, an effect size conventionally classified as large.
Study populations: clinical samples with diagnosed conditions. Individual results vary.
RCT: 74 Male Veterans
Gray et al. (2019)
71% no longer met criteria for PTSD after three 120-minute sessions. 65 of the 74 enrolled veterans completed treatment. Effect sizes g = 1.45 to 2.3. Published in Psychotherapy Research.
Study population: military veterans with diagnosed PTSD. Waitlist-controlled. Individual results vary.
RCT: 30 Veterans
Tylee et al. (2017)
96% no longer met PTSD criteria. 88% remained diagnosis-free at 12-month follow-up. Effect sizes g = 2.79 to 5.33.
Study population: military veterans with diagnosed PTSD. Waitlist-controlled. Individual results vary.
UK Veterans Trial
Sturt et al. (2023)
The first trial to compare RTM against an active treatment rather than a waitlist. RTM achieved 48% PTSD remission vs 16% for trauma-focused CBT. 18-point reduction on PCL-5 vs 8 points. Published in Pilot and Feasibility Studies.
Study population: UK military veterans with diagnosed PTSD. Feasibility trial. Individual results vary.
Where the evidence actually stands
Honesty is more useful to you than certainty. The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies classifies RTM as an intervention with emerging evidence. Most of the trials above used waitlist comparison groups rather than active treatment comparisons, and systematic reviewers have rated the certainty of the effect as low on that basis. Researchers have called for larger trials against established treatments.

This is a promising evidence base, not a settled one. Strong Shoulders is a coaching practice, not a clinical mental health service. These trials studied clinical protocols delivered by trained clinicians to diagnosed populations. They describe the mechanisms the method draws on. They do not predict your result.
THE PROCESS

What the work actually looks like.

Five stages. Systematic. Verifiable. No ambiguity about whether it worked.

01
Free Strategy Session
A relaxed, non-judgemental 30-minute conversation. We get to know each other, assess your situation and determine whether we're a good fit. No pressure. All I need is for you to show up with complete honesty.
02
Assessment and Tier Assignment
In the first full session I assess four dimensions: resistance level, nervous system state, emotional capacity and trauma complexity. This determines which tier of the protocol we start with. Most men begin at Tier 1 or Tier 2.
03
Systematic Release
Working through the six negative emotions (anger, sadness, fear, hurt, guilt, shame), identifying the root cause events where each was first encoded. The emotional charge is released at its source using NLP timeline techniques and memory reconsolidation.
04
Reprogramming and Integration
Once charges are cleared, we reprogram the subconscious with new reference experiences and updated belief systems. Limiting beliefs like 'I'm not good enough' or 'people always leave' are traced to their origin and structurally updated.
05
Testing and Verification
Every release is tested. Think of the original event: if the emotional charge is still there, we haven't finished. If it feels neutral or distant, the work is done. This is verifiable in session, not subjective.
Typical Duration
Program length varies depending on your starting point. Honest timeframe assessment provided in the first session.
RESULTS

What men say after
the work is done.

"Terry has exceptional knowledge and skills when it comes to life coaching and letting go. I was so stubborn at first but he managed to understand exactly what to do and give me that breakthrough. I released all of my childhood trauma I'd been carrying my whole life and projecting it through anger."

Andy W

"After just 2 sessions with Terry, where we went deep into where emotions stem from, such as sadness, guilt and anger, I'm now free from the sadness and substance abuse patterns that have controlled my life for a long time. It feels like stones have been lifted off my shoulders."

Mikkel Blume Larsen

"One of the most transformative experiences of my life. We were able to remove trauma stemming from anger, sadness, regret, guilt and grief. Unlike normal therapists where I am just vomiting information, Terry provided invaluable tools to navigate life's ups and downs."

Matt Johnson

"I was in such a dark place and working with Terry helped me move through really significant blocks. With his help I have managed to shift my mindset and reset myself. Highly recommend."

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What types of trauma can you help with?

Childhood patterns (emotional neglect, absent or volatile parents, bullying), relationship and marital breakdown, divorce, grief and loss, betrayal, workplace pressure, and patterns that trace back to more than one event. If you are carrying a formal diagnosis, that belongs with a clinical practitioner first. This work can sit alongside that care once it is in place.

Do I have to relive my trauma during sessions?

No. We identify when the emotion was first attached and what the emotion was, in order to release it. We don't need to go into deep detail about any events from your life. This is a critical difference from talk therapy: we're releasing the charge, not processing the narrative.

How is this different from EMDR?

EMDR uses bilateral eye movements to process trauma. Strong Shoulders uses NLP timeline techniques, memory reconsolidation and polyvagal-informed processing, which access the subconscious through a different pathway. Some clients come after EMDR didn't fully resolve their issues because the underlying nervous system state wasn't addressed first.

How quickly will I see results?

Progress varies depending on what you're working on. Some clients notice a shift early in the program. The first session includes an honest assessment of realistic timeframes for your situation.

Is this safe for men with complex PTSD?

Strong Shoulders is coaching, not clinical treatment. For complex PTSD with active dissociative symptoms, a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist should be the first point of contact. Coaching can complement clinical treatment for men who are functional but stuck.

What if I'm sceptical or don't believe it will work?

Book in for a chat and let Terry see where you're really at. It's the belief system that needs rewiring, and everyone has a strategy for staying stuck. If we can find out what that is, we can challenge it. There is a famous quote by Henry Ford: 'If you believe you can or you can't, you're right.' That said, scepticism is common among the men who get the strongest results here. What you need is willingness to engage with the process. Book the free strategy session and we will work out together whether this is the right fit.

Do you work with women on trauma release?

Yes, upon request. Strong Shoulders specialises in men, but women who fit the analytical profile and have tried traditional therapy without resolution are welcome.

Can I do this remotely?

Yes. All sessions are 100% virtual via secure video. Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, internationally. The work is internal, so the delivery method has no impact on effectiveness.

What does a trauma release program cost?

Pricing is discussed during the free 30-minute strategy session and depends on program length. Program length varies and is discussed during the strategy session.
