WHY OTHER APPROACHES FALL SHORT

WHY THE STANDARD MODEL DOESN'T WORK FOR ANALYTICAL MEN

There are good therapists in Sydney. This is not an argument against therapy as a category. But there are specific reasons why the standard therapeutic model produces limited results for analytical, high-functioning men.

Talk therapy operates at the conscious level. You discuss the problem, examine its origins, develop insight, build coping strategies. For men who already process the world analytically, this often produces a sophisticated understanding of their patterns without any change to them. You end up articulate about your behaviour while continuing to run it.

The neuroscience explains why. Emotional memory is stored differently from declarative memory. The neural pathways encoding your anxiety response, your self-worth beliefs, or your reactivity were formed through repeated emotional experience, usually in childhood, and they do not update because you understand them intellectually.

To update them, you need to access the memory system directly, create the right neurological conditions, and allow the brain to update the emotional content long term. That process is called memory reconsolidation. It is the primary mechanism underlying the deeper work at Strong Shoulders.

Most approaches also ignore the nervous system entirely. A man in sympathetic activation (fight or flight) or dorsal vagal shutdown (numbness, disconnection) cannot access the material that needs processing regardless of how willing he is. Nervous system state is a hard prerequisite for effective subconscious work.

MEMORY RECONSOLIDATION

When a stored emotional memory is reactivated under the right conditions, there is a brief neurological window during which its emotional content can be updated long term. Astill Wright et al. (2021) reviewed 25 randomised controlled trials of memory reconsolidation therapies and found a standardised mean difference of -1.42, indicating large and sustained symptom reduction. This is the primary mechanism underlying Tier 3 work.

POLYVAGAL THEORY

Dr Stephen Porges' research establishes that the autonomic nervous system operates across three hierarchical states: ventral vagal (social engagement and safety), sympathetic (fight or flight), and dorsal vagal (shutdown and dissociation). I'm Terry Worsfold. I'm based in Melbourne, working with men across Australia including Sydney, entirely virtually.

I wasn't a high performer hiding some secret pain behind a polished exterior. I was barely functioning. Insecure, reactive, numb, people-pleasing to survive, and deeply unsure of who I actually was. I had multiple suicide attempts across different stages of my life.

Externally I was hitting aggressive sales targets in the advertising industry at companies including News Ltd and Carsales. Internally I was falling apart. That gap between what I was producing and what I was feeling is something a lot of Sydney men understand without ever being able to explain it.

The turning point was a marriage breakdown that forced me to stop collecting information and start implementing it. I'd been on a self-development path for over 10 years: working with Tony Robbins in 2014, experiencing Ayahuasca in Peru, studying NLP, neuroscience, memory reconsolidation. Nobody was coming to save me. The actual shift took months once I committed fully.

No. This is coaching. It operates at the subconscious level using evidence-based techniques, but it is not a clinical mental health service. If you have a diagnosed psychiatric condition requiring clinical treatment, I will tell you that directly and refer you appropriately.

How is a life coach different from a therapist?

Therapy typically works at the conscious level through insight, coping strategies and behaviour change. This work operates at the subconscious level using techniques designed to update the neural patterns that therapy often cannot reach.
